WEST END URBAN GARDEN
portland, maine
This garden is a tucked-away urban sanctuary full of life. We’ve been able to play with textural shade plantings that dance off the bricks, along with vibrant containers that help to enclose the patio, adding in natives and enhancing existing plantings with color and texture. The beds are full of ferns, heucheras, sedges, bleeding hearts and epimedium- in addition to some truly magical climbing hydrangeas. The patio pots feature mandevillas that climb and and adorn the back wall of the patio, wrapping around the bistro lights and creating a little oasis for entertaining and enjoyment. We’ve been experimenting with plantings at the base of the vines that can tolerate some shade, providing some downward motion to ground the mandevillas as they reach upward.
